Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Thursday directed Telangana Police to trace a missing youth and present him in court by June 1.
The court gave the direction on a petition by Amboji Naresh’s parents, two days after his wife allegedly committed suicide at her parents’ house in a tragic end of a love story and an inter-caste marriage between the two childhood friends.
The court took note of the alleged suicide of Tummala Swati, who was to appear in the court in connection with the case of her missing husband.
The judge wondered why the 20-year-old was left alone in the house when she had attempted suicide twice.
As Naresh’s father Amboji Venkataiah suspected that Swati’s father was behind his son’s disappearance, police told the court that it was questioning Srinivas Reddy.
The court directed Telangana’s Director General of Police (DGP) to appoint a special officer to trace the missing man and produce him by June 1. It suggested that if the police chief failed to do so, he should order a high-level probe.
Naresh, 23, has been missing since May 2 when he brought his wife to Bhongir town to meet her parents, who had promised to accept their marriage.
The Hyderabad High Court had on Monday given police three days to present Swati. She allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her parents’ house on Tuesday. A day earlier, she tried to end her life by consuming toilet cleaner but survived.
The couple had eloped in March and married in Mumbai against the wishes of Swati’s father, who comes from a higher caste.
Two weeks ago, Swati’s father reportedly invited the young couple to their hometown Bhongir and promised to accept their marriage.
When they arrived in the town, Swati was reportedly taken away by her father while Naresh went missing shortly thereafter.
Interestingly, Swati’s father has filed a case of dowry harassment against Naresh, accusing him of torturing his daughter.
Naresh’s father denied the allegation. He approached the High Court, seeking direction to police to trace his son.
