Couple killed for honour in capital

New Delhi, June 15: Even as the Centre struggles to frame a law to check honour killings, a young couple was hacked to death for honour in New Delhi.

Ashu, 19, and her 21-year-old boyfriend Yogesh Kumar were brutally murdered by four members of Ashu’s family, which was against the relationship because they belonged to different communities.

Police said the couple was found murdered at the house of Ashu’s uncle in northwest Delhi. Neighbours spotted their bodies and informed police. The bodies bore multiple stab wounds and head injuries, police said.
All family members of Ashu are absconding.

“Prima facie, it seems to be a case of honour killing. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” investigating officer Pankaj Kumar said.

He said the couple lived in Gokulpuri, but was called by Ashu’s family members to her uncle’s house in Swaroop Nagar and stabbed to death.

“Ashu had come to meet her relatives at Swaroop Nagar. They asked Yogesh to join in. We are looking for her family members,” Kumar said.

“We learnt from neighbours that Ashu was having an affair with Yogesh for the past several months. The elders in her family had warned Ashu against continuing the relationship. Neighbours said the elders would beat her up many a time over this,” he said.
