A couple was arrested here for being allegedly involved in a kidney racket, police said today.
The couple were arrested midnight last night from a relative’s house at Benachity market area in the steel town
following a complaint by a woman in Kolkata.
The woman, who had been deserted by her husband, complained to the Kolkata police that the couple had admitted
her to a nursing home and got removed one of her kidneys through operation with her consent. However,they did not pay her the money that was agreed upon.
The two were forwarded to a local court during the day which remanded them to police custody for five days.
The police claimed that the couple had been involved in selling at least 40 kidneys earlier.
Durgapur-Asansol police commissioner Ajay Nanda said investigations were on to ascertain whether the two were part
of a larger kidney racket.
