Corporal punishment: Teacher hits girl

Hyderabad, July 30: Corporal punishment reared its ugly head once again, this time in a private school in Secunderabad. A Class IV student
of St Peter’s High School, Bowenpally, was hit on the hit with a metal geometry box by her Science teacher on Tuesday because she was being ‘mischievous’.

The girl, Isha (8), suffered a minor injury on her head but was evidently too scared to alert anyone about the incident throughout the day.

It was only when her father, Vijay Paul, came to pick her up after school that Isha revealed the matter to him.

The teacher apologised to the girl’s parents after the latter lodged a complaint with the police. Subsequently, the complaint was withdrawn.

Admitting that the Science teacher Swapna was at fault for physically punishing the girl, the school management sought an explanation from the former.

“Isha was sitting in the first row and she tends to be hyperactive. She was chattering with other students and being mischievous.

When she did not obey the teacher’s instructions to stay calm, the latter hit her,” school Principal T A Reddy told Expresso.

The incident took place in the second period of the class on Tuesday. Isha, however, did not complain about the injury to other teachers or the Principal, who reportedly pays a visit to all the classes daily.

After school hours, a traumatised Isha showed her father the injury.

A shocked Vijay Paul immediately complained to the school management. But as the St Peter’s High School authorities failed to take the issue seriously, he was went ahead and lodged a complaint with the Bowenpally police.

T A Reddy, however, said that they immediately pulled up the teacher. He said that Swapna had apologised for her rash action.

“She was very apologetic about the incident.

In fact, her daughter too studies in our school,” Reddy said and added that he had even taken Isha to Yashoda Hospitals at Secunderabad for treatment.

Bowenpally police inspector M Ganesh Reddy said that Vijay Paul only wanted that the teacher Swapna to be given a stern warning so that she did not repeat her actions either with his daughter or other students.

After Swapna apologised to the parents, Vijay Paul withdrew the police complaint.
