Chennai, May 27: With mounting complaints from people of alleged police harassment at the police station during filing of a First Information Report, City Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji has directed his officers to go to the victim’s house or place of crime, register a police complaint and send them the FIR.
This is the first such initiative in the country.
“The FIR will now be sent home within a short span of the complaint being registered. People need not go to the police station to get it done. A victim can call the jurisdictional police station and inform them about the incident. Within minutes, a police official will reach the spot and register the complaint. He will then dispatch the FIR to the victim’s address. The objective is to help the aggrieved person and minimize his trauma by cutting down his visits to the police station. I have already issued instructions to my officers to start sending the FIRs home. Soon, we will inform the people through the media regarding the officers concerned and their contact details who they can call in the wake of a crime. I will personally supervise the implementation of the order and monitor the movement of police officials,” Mr. Mirji told this newspaper.
The police chief has also introduced a new beat system under which at least two constables will be allocated an area, which they will “adopt” and keep tabs on. Mr. Mirji has also held meetings with all the deputy commissioners of police and discussed the possibility of “coming out on the streets” in the evenings – between 6 pm and 10 pm to patrol and secure the City.
“From the constables to the Commissioner, all officers will be required to go out and monitor the law and order situation in Bengaluru. I also want to visit the city area-wise, interact with the people and elicit their opinion on how to improve the policing,” he added.
“Rowdies will be booked under stringent Goonda Act and no third-party interference will be tolerated in property disputes. I will take strict action against any third party who gets involved in land disputes”, said Mr. Mirji.
