UP cops’ ‘trigger-happy’ remarks spark controversy

An Uttar Pradesh DIG and a sub-inspector have landed in controversy with the officer saying he would have killed his sister if she had eloped and the other cop remarking that he would have opened fire at an MLA who was booked for allegedly threatening him on phone.

DIG Saharanpur S K Mathur made the controverisal remark to a man who had come to lodge a missing complaint about his sister Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order)Jagmohan Yadav said Mathur has denied having made the remarks yesterday.

However, “if such a thing has been said, then further action will be taken,” Yadav said noting that it was a serious issue in the wake of honour killing incidents in the area.

“If something like this has been said by a senior officer, then it is wrong as people come to police with
expectations,” he said.

“An inquiry would be conducted into the alleged remarks of DIG Saharanpur S K Mathur and a report would also be sought from IG in this regard,” he said.

The National Commission for Women demanded Mathur be suspended for his “cowardly” response and for shying away from
his responsibility.

In a separate incident, a video footage was aired by TV channels showing sub-inspector Harivansh Yadav posted in
Allahabad speaking about a telephonic conversation between him and ruling SP MLA Mahesh Narain Singh, who represents Handia seat in the state assembly, and saying he could have “opened fire if the MLA were present in front of me”.
