Cops promise leeway to revellers

Hyderabad, December 30: PARTY scene on New Year’s Eve, it seems, is going to be ‘thanda’.

Perhaps for the first time, Hyderabadis would be ushering in the New Year under the force of section 144! But then, the revellers need not worry, assure the Hyderabad city police. Interestingly, they want everyone to come out on the roads and celebrate the occasion.

On the other hand, those planning to go to pubs and other watering holes in the city would be celebrating under the ‘shadow’ of the gun, literally.

Massive security arrangements are being made — both by the police and the organisers — following an announcement by the pro-Telangana organisations that they would thwart the celebrations on the night of December 31.

“All the star hotels and pubs are being provided security. People should not be deterred by the threats given by anyone. There will be foolproof security at all places and we appeal to the people to participate in the celebrations,’’ Hyderabad Police Commissioner Prasada Rao said, talking to Expresso.

Asked about the ban on gatherings, the Commissioner said though section 144 has been imposed, it would not come in the way of celebrations.

“We will use our discretion while enforcing the prohibitory orders. It will not come in the way of New Year revelry. Only in case of violence, we will take a call on this. Additional security cover is being provided at all places where people gather that day,’’ Prasada Rao clarified.

The managements of major pubs and organisers of New Year events at various places in the city are engaging additional bouncers to ensure safety of their customers. “We already have bouncers but for December 31 night, we have hired a few more from various gyms in the city,’’ an event manager said.

Public response to the events has been poor so far as not many passes have been picked up, he remarked indicating the prevailing scenario in the city.
