New Delhi: Cops will be fined if they fail to function on time. In case they do not complete passport verification formalities within 20 days, they are liable to be fined Rs. 250 per day or Rs. 5, 000. The same fine will be applicable if they fail to provide the copy of an FIR on the same day when a complaint is lodged with the police or they do not release a seized vehicle within three days after completion of all the formalities.
These penalties have been suggested by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in order to make cops accountable for the delivery of services to the citizens to inculcate good practices among police professionals. BPR&D made these suggestions after PM Modi called for Uniform Public Services related to police.
Apex police research organization made a list of 45 services as ‘Public Delivery Services’.
However, few experts opine that these suggestions are harsh and not practicable as there is only one police officer for every 729 citizens in India.
According to the report shared with Ministry of Home Affairs, BPR&D made recommendations that time schedule should be fixed for the completion of these tasks.
Citizens can approach appellate authority if the services are delayed. Report further recommends that appellate authority could be a senior officer of the rank of IG or Addl. DGP.
