Hyderabad, May 12: With indications that some individuals or groups might try to take advantage of the prevailing volatile situation in the Old City and resort to violence to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the Makkah Masjid blasts on May 18, Hyderabad police has decided to chalk out plans for a tight security cover in and around the area.
City police commissioner AK Khan will convene a meeting with his team of officials on Thursday to discuss security arrangements for May 18.
Though Viqaruddin Ahmed, the self-styled head of militant outfit Tehreek Galba-e-Islam (TSI), who allegedly shot dead two police constables on the second and third anniversary of the Makkah blasts is behind bars, police officials feel groups bent upon disturbing peace in the Old City may use this opportunity to flare up communal passions.
Top sources told Express that though there was minor trouble after Akbaruddin was attacked in Barkas recently, inputs pouring in suggest some groups might take advantage of the volatile situation and resort to acts to disturb peace.
Besides various groups, officials are also not ruling out the possibility of Viqaruddin, though in prison, masterminding some violent act through his sympathisers, as it was he who started this ‘trend’ of targeting policemen on the anniversary.
Viqar had shot dead two police constables- one at Falaknuma on May 18, 2009 and the other at Shalibanda on May 14, 2010, and left behind a CD or a letter under the banner of TGI.
Viqar alias Amir, notorious for his violent behaviour with policemen even inside the prison, had vowed to avenge the police firing that took place immediately after the Makkah Masjid blast in 2007, in which a few lives were lost.
In July 2010, Viqar and his associates- Syed Amjad, Zakir, Dr Haneef, Riaz and Sayeed were arrested by police and weapons recovered from them.
“We cannot say which individual or group may resort to violence but we will have in place tight security,” a police official said. Already, some organisations are said to be planning peaceful protests that day.
In fact, Viqar was lodged in Cherlapally prison but after he and fellow prisoners attacked the prison staff in Papagni block, hewas shifted to another prison.
“His behaviour with prison staff continues to be highhanded,” a source said.
“All security arrangements for May 18 will be finalised in tomorrow’s meeting,” sources said adding the Task Force, armed personnel from the AP Special Police and forces from other zones of Hyderabad police will be deployed in the Old City.
