Lucknow, July 06: A policeman was gunned down here Tuesday by a group of car-borne criminals during police’s effort to apprehend them, an official said.
Sachin Kumar, a constable in the SOG (Special Operation Group), was shot dead by three criminals in Jhinjhana town along the Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border.
“Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted the criminals while they were trying to flee after committing a loot,” Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar told reporters in Muzaffarnagar, some 350-km from Lucknow.
“As the assailants noticed the police, they started firing indiscriminately, killing Sachin on the spot. We also retaliated, but the criminals managed to escape leaving the vehicle,” he added.
According to police, an operation was underway to nab the criminals, who could be hiding in Haryana.
