Lucknow, April 13: Imam Council of India will organise a one-day convention here on April 16 to discuss its demand for payment of salaries to Imams as per Supreme Court order.
“The economic condition of Imams is pathetic. To discuss ways and means to press demand for salaries to Imams we will hold a convention here on April 16,” Maulana Hifazur Rahman told reporters here.
He said that in Uttar Pradesh there were over 3.25 lakh Imams, who hardly gets Rs 500 salary.
In an order in 1993, the Supreme Court had directed the Central government to pay salaries to Imams associated with mosques affiliated to wakf board, he said.
