In a shocking incident, a civil contractor locked up a classroom forcing the little children to study in a verandah of a government primary school at Repaka village in Karimnagar district. The contractor took the extreme step as he was not paid for his work.
According to sources Itukuri Balaiah bagged the contract for Rs 2 lakh for construction of additional classroom on the school premises as part of National Programme for Education of Girls for Elementary Level (NPEGEL) in 2009, but he did not get paid after completion of the work.
He approached the officers several times to get the pending amount but all in vain. Annoyed with the attitude of the officials, he locked up the classroom.
Reacting to these officers at the mandal-level said that the contractor had not submitted the appropriate documents. That is why the payment was delayed, they added.
