Contest for Mayor post hotting up

Hyderabad, November 30: With each passing day, the contest for the prestigious Mayor post is hotting up among the three political parties – Congress, Telugu Desam and Majilis Ittehadul-e-Muslimeen (MIM).

The election to the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor would be held on December 4 at Jubilee Hall, Public Gardens.

The State Government has recently amended the rules enabling holding of the meeting for election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor at a place other than the office of GHMC. This became necessary since the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) head office doesn’t have a place to accommodate 200 members.

The GHMC has completed the task of finalising the list of ex-officio members.

The total ex-officio members of Greater Hyderabad is 65.

Of the 215 members including 150 newly elected Corporators and 65 exofficio members consisting members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, MLAs including nominated MLA and MLCs are eligible to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Any party needs 108 members to get their Mayor and Deputy Nayor elected.

None of three parties have the requisite numbers. Secret parleys are going on between MIM and Congress.

The Congress has appointed a committee to hold talks with MIM and other parties to garner their support.

Of the 215 members, Congress has 93 members (52 corporators and 41 ex-officio members), MIM has 52 members (43 corporators and 9 ex-officio members), Telugu Desam Party has 50 members (45 corpporators and 5 ex-officio members), CPI and CPM have four exofficio members, Lok Satta has one exofficio member, BJP (5 corporators and one ex-officio member), Praja Rajyam party one corporator, Majilis Bachao Tehreek (1 corporator) and 3 independent corporators and four ex-officio members.

According to Section 90 (Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act), 1955, the elected and the ex-officio members should elect one of the elected members as Mayor and another as Deputy Mayor at the first meeting of the corporation by raising hands on party basis duly obeying the party whip.
