Hyderabad, June 16: Residents of Patelnagar at Amberpet have been getting contaminated drinking water for the past 10 days.
With the residents bringing it to the notice of public representatives, officials rushed to the place to carry out tests to check the water samples for contamination.
Water board officials said there are 2,000 water connections in the locality with water being supplied from two sources–Adikmet and Shivam reservoirs–everyday.
Water Board officials and representatives of the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) rushed to Patelnagar and carried out tests.
IPM representatives who collected water samples randomly conducted a `Ortho Toluidine’ (OT) test on the water samples and found contamination in two samples of water.
“We found the contamination in the water samples. We collected samples at Adikmet and Shivam reservoirs also, which are the main water sources to the locality. It was found that there was no `residual chlorine’ (RC) in the water,” IPM sample-taker N Saidaiah said.
Water samples were also collected at various houses and tested, he said. Following this, water board officials released chlorine in the water.
“The water is smelling bad and was not potable. The colour of the water has also changed and is muddy,” G Lalitha, a resident said.
Another resident O Veena said the water smelt like drainage water which got mixed with it.
HMWS&SB deputy general manager (E) SD-III, Adikmet, Y Hanumantha Rao denied and said that the water board was supplying treated water to the entire locality on a daily basis. “The problem is present in only two houses,” he said.
