New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable was suspended after an accused in a suspected motorcycle theft case fled from his custody at a city hospital in north-west Delhi.
The incident took place on Friday when policemen at Jehan nabbed two persons, Shahidul and Ravi, with a stolen motorcycle and registered an FIR at Jahangirpuri police station.
Two constables — Ram Swaroop and Shubhash — had taken the duo to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital for a medical examination. Another constable Om Prakash was additionally deployed to ensure the suspects do not escape.
While Swaroop held the hands of Shahidul, Ravi was under Shubhash’s grip.
“While returning to the police vehicle after the medical examination, Shahidul expressed his desire to relieve himself.
When got an opportunity, Shahidul pushed constable Swaroop who held him by hand and fled,” said a senior police officer.
The policemen chased Shahidul, but he managed to escape.
Wireless messages announcing the escape were flashed soon, but to no avail.
According to the constable, Shahidul fled through the narrow lanes of the nearby colony. A local of the area, Shahidul had a fair knowledge of the area and its lanes and roads.
Swaroop was subsequently suspended and sent to police lines for alleged dereliction of duty. Police have also registered a case against Shahidul for escaping from custody.
