Constable, beaten by molesters, dies

Ashim Kumar Dam, a constable of Kolkata Police, who was beaten up by youths for trying to save a girl from being molested on the day of Holi at Birati, succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning.

Dam, a resident of Birati, was attached to Entaly police station. He was 27 years old. Police have not made a single arrest even though a complaint was lodged against seven persons at Airport Police station on the day he was attacked.

Sources in Kolkata Police said, a group of youths stormed the house of a girl at Birati on Thursday afternoon, and tried to molest her. They were allegedly in an inebriated condition. When the girl and his family members raised an alarm, Dam, who stays in the same neighbourhood, rushed in. The youths then fled from the girl’s house.

However, an hour later, they returned. This time armed with chopper, hockey sticks and sword. As they again barged into the girl’s house, Dam hearing her cries came to her rescue. As he intervened, the youths started beating him up with arms. The youths left the house only after more residents of the nearby area came to rescue them. Dam was initially rushed to a local hospital from where he was shifted to a city-based private hospital.

After Dam’s death this morning, raids are being conducted, said police, to nab those involved in the attack. A murder case has been also slapped against them.
