Conspiracy to abandon Urdu as first language in English medium residential schools in Nizamabad

Govt. of A.P. established 12 Urdu medium residential schools in the state to eradicate educational backwardness of Minorities. Urdu was prescribed as the first language in these English medium residential schools.

With an intention to abandon the teaching of Urdu as the first language in these schools, Govt. issued orders to choose any of the three languages, namely Urdu, Hindi or Telugu as the first language.

In Rayalaseema and Andhra Region, six schools were started whereas in Telangana districts also six schools were established in Nizamabad (Kamareddy) Medak (Zaheerabad) Nalgonda Girls school, Vanasthalipuram, Mahboobnagar (Wanaparthy) and Hyderabad. These schools were started in 2007. In kamareddy, the school was started in 2008 sought in which 250 students sought admissions. Eleven teachers are working in this school. Most of the students of this school are the Muslims. Urdu is being taught as the first language. Some non-Muslim parents also got their children admitted in this school so that they could learn Urdu. Most of the headmasters are non-Muslims.

Exhibiting their linguistic narrow-mindedness, they represented to the Govt. to introduce three-language formula and to permit teaching Hindu and Telugu as first language in these schools besides Urdu. Govt. has sought the details of the students whose mother tongue is Telugu. It is reported that the principals of these schools have furnished the information to this effect.

Govt. is trying to convert these residential schools, which were meant for minorities into General English medium schools in which there won’t be any place for teaching Urdu as a compulsory first language.

Govt. has not been taking interest to provide basic amenities in these schools. There are no facilities of uniform and cosmetic charges etc. in these schools by the Govt.

The residential school in Kamareddy is functioning in a rented building. Dr. YSR had laid the foundation stone for the construction of school building on 1st March 2008 but no interest was shown for its construction. Rupees one crore were sanction in one year and the responsibility of construction was given to Dept. of Fisheries. The engineer of this Dept. misappropriated this mount and when this scam came to limelight, the construction work was left incomplete. On enquiry, Mr. Saleem Pasha, Minority Welfare Officer told that due to the misappropriation of funds of the engineer of the Dept of Fisheries, the construction work has been stopped.

Besides Kamareddy, in other districts also constructions of school buildings have been stopped. As a result of which these schools are functioning in rented buildings. Mr. Mohammed Abdul Waheed, Managing Director of A.P. State Minorities Finance Corporation had visited the district soon after taking charge but he didn’t bother to inspect the incomplete construction work of the residential school building.

Due to the negligence of the officials of the Dept. of Minorities Welfare, developmental works pertaining to Minorities are being help up and they are facing heavy losses.

The communal minded officers are hatching conspiracies to abandon teaching of Urdu as the first language in these schools.

It will be better if the leaders of Minority community pay attention to this conspiracy to represent the Govt. to make teaching Urdu as the compulsory first language in these English medium residential schools which have been opened to facilitate minorities to get higher education through the medium of English and also to learn their mother tongue Urdu as the compulsory first language.
