Congress MP’s niece killed for dowry

Hyderabad, June 28: Mayuri Yadav, 25, niece of Secunderabad Congress MP Anjan Kumar Yadav was found burnt to death in her house in Hyderabad, allegedly for dowry. Her charred body was found by neighbours and relatives, who then alerted the police. While Mayuri’s father is accusing her in-laws of harassing her they say she committed suicide.

Victim’s Sister-in-Law Kamati Yadav said, “We have not done anything. She had an argument with her husband over attending a family function. She was upset. She went inside her room and set herself ablaze.”

This incident comes close on the heels of the murder of Union Minister Jaipal Reddy’s niece allegedly by her husband in a fit of rage. As news of Mayuri’s death spread, supporters of the Congress MP ransacked the house of her in-laws who are now absconding.

ACP Govardhan Reddy said, “We have registered a case of dowry death against the husband and three of his family members. We have sent the body for post mortem. The report is expected to come soon and then further investigations will be done.”

Married for five years to Arjun yadav, Mayuri is survived by three children.

In what is being seen as a high profile case of dowry death, with the body of the minister’s niece completely charred, experts say the post mortem report may only help in finding whether she was burnt to death or burnt after being killed.

Police sources say, regardless of it being a suicide or a murder, with a dowry death case registered, arrests of the in-laws are inevitable.
