Hyderabad: The Congress leaders and cadre plunged into revelry and burst fire crackers when Congress supremo and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi set her foot on Telangana soil on Friday evening after its formation four-and-a-half years ago. She arrived in the city to campaign for the party candidates.
This was also her first public appearance after keeping away from public life for a long time due to her ill-health. Although, elections are going to be held in five States, Sonia Gandhi has decided to address the Medchal public meeting following a request made by the Telangana party leaders. AICC president Rahul Gandhi also took part in the meeting. Both leaders arrived in Begumpet airport in separate special planes.
Earlier, local police made elaborate arrangements for Sonia Gandhi’s public meeting to avoid any untoward incident during the meeting. As many as 1,000 police personnel were deployed at the public meeting. The organizers put up 20 entrance points for public to enter the venue. Balanagar DCP Padmaja supervised security arrangements.
