Congress leader Venkata Swamy passes away

Senior Congress leader G Venkata Swamy passed away here on Monday evening.

Venkata Swamy, popularly known as Kaka, was admitted to the Care Hospital in Banjara Hills and was placed on ventilator. He breathed his last on Monday evening. He was 85.

Born on October 5, 1929, Venkatswami was a freedom fighter and veteran Congress leader. He served as MLA representing Peddapalli constituency from 1957-62 and 1978-84. He got elected to the Lok Sabha for seven terms in 1967, 1971, 1977, 1989, 1991, 1996 and 2004. He also served as the Union Minister and held important portfolios including Labour and Textiles. He also served as the cabinet minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1978-1982 and was then made PCC President from 1982-1984.

His sons G Vivek and G Vinod were MP and MLA respectively. (INN)
