‘Congress distancing itself from people’

Hyderabad, February 20: The decision of the Congress MLAs to breakaway from the Joint Action Committee (JAC), appeared to have jarred the other constituents of the organisation, which have been insisting that all elected members, particularity the MLAs, should resign forthwith to force the Centre to deliver Telangana.

The Congress, which is the largest constituent of the JAC, has said that it will not have anything to do with the JAC and that the ruling party members would fight for Telangana by continuing to remain as legislators and preparing themselves for `any sacrifice.’ JAC convenor Prof M Kodandaram, reacting sharply to the Congress’ decision, said that by breaking away from the JAC, the Congress was in fact distancing itself from the people of Telangana.

He said the decision of the JAC that all the elected representatives should quit was taken after consulting all the member constituents including the Congress.

He wanted the Congress Central leadership to clarify its stand on Telangana and whether the UPA would introduce a bill in the Parliament for creation of a separate State.

The JAC had no faith in the Justice BN Srikrishna Committee that it would deliver Telangana since it was an issue that had to be settled by the political leadership and not a technical committee, the JAC convener said.

He said the only way to force the Centre to create separate State was by intensifying the agitation. He urged the Congress leaders to take up Telangana movement by respecting the sentiments of the people.

The JAC would announce its future course of agitation after consultation all the constituents and other non-political members.

He urged the State Government to permit tomorrow’s Chalo Assembly programme of students.

Telangana JAC supported the journalists’ decision to boycott the Assembly session tomorrow in protest against the lathicharge against them.
