Congress anti-farmer, says Naidu

Hyderabad, December 06: Describing as spineless, the Kiran Kumar-led Congress government in the State, leader of opposition N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday said farmers’ interests were totally ignored and all the promises made in the manifesto were given a go-by, causing hardships to farmers with spiralling costs and decline of support price.

Initiating the debate, Naidu justified his party decision to move no confidence motion, alleging that there was no sincerity on part of the Congress, which has boasted of its pro-farmer governance.

Doling out figures on how much a farmer has to spend for the yield on one acre, he said the farmers are ending up making losses and voluntarily declaring crop holiday while the government has taken no action to restore the confidence among farming community.

Cost of seeds, fertilizers and other agricultural inputs has drastically increased while the support price did not proportionately increase and the state failed to check the gap. This apart drought and inability to supply power for nine hours has added to the misery of the farmers, he said. Cotton price in international market was much higher than what was being offered here, he lamented.

The Rachabanda and other programmes were reduced to party functions and Congress workers were being benefited by them. The Government is not going to farmer and is not thinking about them, he said amidst protests from the ruling party.

This apart, corruption has been rampant in the government, he alleged. Common man is overburdened with taxes while the rich are getting contracts and concessions. He charged the Chief Minister with nepotism and said his brother has been very active in government functions and hospitals.

He also said that prime land was being allocated to vested interests causing a huge loss to the exchequer.
