Cong workers burn Irani’s effigy to protest Vemula’s death

Phagwara: Congress workers in Punjab today burnt the effigy of Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and sought her resignation over the death of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula.

The protesting Congress workers also alleged that atrocities against Dalits have increased after the BJP-led NDA government came to power.

PPCC general secretary Joginder Singh Mann accused Irani of “pressuring” the Hyderabad University Vice Chancellor to take “unwarranted disciplinary action” against five Dalit scholars, forcing one of them to end his life.

Accusing Irani of “misleading” the country on the matter, Mann alleged that Vemula’s death was a murder and demanded that the VC be also sacked.
