Cong says UP govt, not BSP fought assembly bye-polls

New Delhi, August 24: Seeking to take the sheen out of the BSP victory in the assembly bye-polls in Uttar Pradesh, Congress today alleged that the elections were not fought by the ruling party but by the state government.

“In these bye-elections, administration openly worked for the BSP. The bye-polls were not fought by the BSP but by the UP government,” AICC General Secretary in charge of the state Digvijay Singh told reporters here.

In the assembly bye-elections for four seats in the state, the BSP won three seats while the Rashtriya Lok Dal won one seat.

Singh dismissed controversy on the issue of setting up a separate authority for the development of Bundelkhand region which comprises of areas from both UP and Madhya Pradesh.

“We are not taking away the rights of the UP and MP governments to implement the development schemes under the authority,” he said, adding that the authority was being thought of because of inter-state issues.

A delegation led by party General Secretary Rahul Gandhi had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a few weeks ago demanding a package for Bundelkhand and setting up a separate Bundelkhand Development Authority.
