Cong MLAs object to written assurance to Telangana lawyers

Hyderabad, September 20: The Congress legislators from non-Telangana regions Monday took exception to the Andhra Pradesh government giving a written assurance to Telangana lawyers following their agitation demanding 42 per cent share in judicial posts.

“We feel it is objectionable to give it in writing about things that are not in Constitution and the orders issued by President on the Telangana issue. We feel it will lead to more problems in future,” S Sailajanath, convener of Congress MLAs and MLCs from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, told reporters.

He was speaking after submitting a memorandum to Chief Minister K Rosaiah on the Telangana lawyers stir.

“We told the chief minister that it is not correct to give a written assurance by talking to one side alone. He said an appropriate decision would be taken after examining all aspects, including the Constitution, and also the points raised by us,” Sailajanath said.

The Telangana lawyers held a six-day agitation seeking 42 per cent share in various posts of the judiciary.

They called off their stir on Saturday last after the state government promised to ensure “equitable justice” in appointment of law officers in the High Court and Tribunals.

Congress legislators from coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions have been contending that a quota in recruitment cannot be given to a particular region and that the government should listen to them before giving any assurance to Telangana lawyers.
