Cong calls WB bandh protesting attacks by CPM workers

Kolkata, July 17: The state Congress decided to observe a 12-hour bandh on Friday in West Bengal in protest against the “brutal attack” allegedly by CPI(M) supporters on its legislators at Mangalkot in Burdwan district.

“The Pradesh Congress Committee met here today (Thursday) and unanimously decided to call a 12-hour state-wide Bandh over yesterday’s incident at Mangolkot,” state Congress working president Subrata Mukherjee said here yesterday.

Appealing to ally Trinamool Congress to support the shutdown, Mukherjee said the party had no alternative but to call a bandh to protest continued “atrocities” by CPI(M) on Opposition workers and leaders.

“That even the MLAs are not safe from CPI(M) repression is amply proved by the latest attack on Congress MLAs at Mangolkot,” he said.

Mukherjee said that several of the nine legislators who visited Mangolkot were injured in the attack by “armed CPI(M) supporters”.
