Compulsory sports period in schools from this year: CM

Hyderabad, January 11 (INN): Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said that the State Government was contemplating to make sports a compulsory period in all schools from this year.

Inaugurating the 57th Senior National Ball Badminton Championship for men and women at the HAL Grounds Balanagar here on Tuesday, he said that the government is going to take up construction of stadiums in each assembly constituency during this year by spending Rs 400 to 500 Crores.

The Chief Minister underlined the need to have a sports policy to encourage sports in the state. He also urged the parents to encourage their children to take up sports as any other profession. Encouragement should be given to the sportsmen by way of fee waiver, providing employment and career advancement. He appreciated the efforts of various Government departments such as Railways, HAL, Army, Air Force, Police for encouraging sportsmen by providing them employment. He appealed to the media to popularise the rural sports in a big way.

Equal weightage should be given to all sports, he added. (INN)
