Compensation to parents 28 yrs after son’s death

New Delhi, January 13: Twenty eight years after the incident, the Supreme Court has awarded Rs two lakh as compensation to parents of a CRPF constable who was shot dead in a case of “mistaken identity” by his colleague.

The government had claimed that the constable Sunil Kumar Tiwari, who was with 66th Battalion of CRPF in Mizoram, was shot dead on February 1, 1982, at the residence of the Development Commissioner of Aizwal by a fellow constable Desh Raj who in the darkness had presumed the deceased to be an intruder as the deceased was reportedly climbing a guava tree.

A bench of Justices V S Sirpurkar and Mukundakam Sharma enhanced the compensation to Rs two lakh as against the Rs one lakh awarded by the Chattisgarh High Court to the aged parents of the deceased towards ” mental agony”, besides, his being the sole breadwinner of the family.
