A company in Guntur to commercialize gau mutram

Guntur: A company in Guntur district has received a notice by a deputy commercial tax officer asking the former to pay five per cent tax on the cow urine that it was selling. Deputy Commercial Tax Officer R Nageswara Rao said that many Ayurvedic products enjoy exemption. However, cow urine was not on the list. A news media house reported that the Telugu Desam Party is mooting to impose a five per cent VAT on cow urine (gau mutram).

The deputy commercial tax officer said that as many as 30 Ayurvedic products enjoy exemption from VAT, but cow urine is not on the list declared under the entry No. 117 of AP Value Added Tax law. The spokesperson of the company which received the notice, said, “We tried explaining the adverse implications of levying tax on gou mutram to the officials. It only results in discouraging the consumption of cow urine besides hurting the sentiments of the people.”
