57 rioters have been held, following eruption of communal violence in Udgir town in Latur district of Maharashtra and curfew has been imposed in the town. Trouble began on Friday after rumours were spread that a “green flag” has been hoisted on the historical Udgir Fort. Some people wanted to hold a protest march on Saturday. When they were stopped by the police, they pelted stone and both the communities started targeting each other.
Police detained the protesters at Shivaji Chowk. Protestors also set a few vehicles ablaze and damaged handcarts. Properties belonging to members of the minority community were targeted, which resulted in a clash between the two communities. Police had to use teargas to disburse people from both sides. 57 people from both the communities were detained for rioting. Curfew has been imposed in Udgir.
