Communal violence continues in Adoni, curfew extended

Kurnool, September 07: At least a dozen people including policemen were injured in fresh incidents of violence in the Adoni town of Kurnool district on Tuesday.

The police fired three rounds in air and resorted to lathi-charge to quell a violent mob in Buddekal and Vaddegere villages. Stray cases of stone pelting were also reported from the Adoni Town where the clashes originally began on Tuesday during Ganesh immersion procession.

According to police sources, seven persons including four policemen sustained injuries in the melee. All the injured have been shifted to Adoni hospital and their condition is stated to be out of danger. With mobs resorted to stone pelting, the police fired three rounds in air to bring the situation under control.

With reports of violence, the police extended the curfew to Buddekal, Barpeta and Vaddegere. Earlier on Monday the police imposed curfew at Victoria Street near Madina Mosque in Adoni Town following clashes that broke out between the two communities during the Ganesh immersion procession.

Over 40 people were reported to have sustained injuries in stone-pelting and other incidents of violence. The Monday incident also claimed one life.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Anil Kumar, Collector Ramsankar Naik, Superintendent of Police M Sivaprasad and Joint Collector Jyothi Buddha Prakash held meetings with the local leaders to bring situation under control.

According to DIG Anil Kumar, about 1,500 police personnel have been deployed in all sensitive areas to prevent further violence. District SP Sivaprasad said that the situation was under control.
