Bareilly: An incident of communal harmony from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh shows humanity is very much alive.
As per a report in Navbharat Times, a group of Muslim men came together to collect around Rs 50,000 in donations in order to free 15 Hindus languishing in a jail.
The men were in judicial custody for involvement in petty crimes and could not come out as their families did not have the money to pay bail/fine amount.
In fact, one of the men had even completed his jail term but was still languishing inside as he could not pay the fine amount of Rs 1000.
Muslims in Jail:
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Muslims make up for over 21 per cent of all undertrials lodged in various jails in the country even as their population is just over 14 per cent of the country’s total population.
An analysis of NCRB’s prison data of states with significant Muslim population also revealed that in some states the ratio of percentage of Muslim undertrials in jails to that of the population is almost 2:1.
