Commissioner orders switching off air-conditioners in GHMC till February to save energy

Hyderabad: To control expenditure in the GHMC departments, Commissioner Dr Janardhan Reddy has asked his subordinates to stop using air-conditioners in the central, zone and circle offices in view of winter season.

As part of saving energy, the Commissioner said air-conditioners should not be used till February next in view of winter season and issued orders today. The GHMC was saving the revenue following reforms taken and minimise payment of electricity charges, he said. One of the steps to control expenditure was to save energy and the GHMC has replaced LED bulbs. Of the 4.65 lakh streetlights, so far 3.20 lakh bulbs have been replaced with LED, the Commissioner said, adding that the Corporation could save 50 per cent energy by using LED bulbs.

“Similarly, if we stop using air-conditioners in all the GHMC head office till February, we can save about Rs 3,75,900 per month. The office has 137 air-conditioners and if we run one air-conditioner for an hour it will consume three units and each unit cost would be Rs seven”, he said. The Commissioner said he would be holding meetings with concerned officials like engineers and other officials in connection with saving of energy regularly. (NSS)
