New Delhi, June 01: Suruchi Dayal (18) scored 88.4 per cent in the Class XII Board examinations. With this percentage and a Commerce background, she thought she could manage to pursue BSc (H) Mathematics in most of the esteemed colleges in Delhi University.
But she had reason to be confused at the time of admission to her course of choice. “Being a Commerce student, I was in a dilemma about whether I can get admission in this course or not.
” The course was in the news last year as the BA (H) Mathematics course was combined with it, and the subject continued to be called BSc (H) Mathematics. BA (H) Mathematics has been one of the course choices for Commerce-background students.
The change in the nomenclature of the course has left students confused. “It is difficult for everyone to get into BCom (H) and my second priority is to pursue Mathematics (H).
I still can’t get used to calling it BSc (H) Mathematics,” said Riya Gosh, a DU aspirant. BSc (H) mathe-magic The students are at sea regarding the course and its content.
“I have asked the counsellors and the teachers to display the information regarding this course. The Commerce students are equally eligible for the course”, said Nandita Narain, HoD, Mathematics, St Stephen’s College.
“Many Commerce students came to us to ask whether they can apply for BSc (H) Mathematics. The confusion rising among them is possibly due to the name of the course, which says Bachelors of Mathematical Science,” said Prashanto Chatterjee, Associate Professor, Department Of Mathematics, St Stephen’s, a part of the college counselling.
To be eligible for the course, students need to have studied Mathematics till Class XII. “The students have to score well in English and Mathematics. The subject Mathematics itself is a Science.
They will have a freedom to make a choice among the subjects of their stream”, said Saroj Malik, Associate Professor, Department Of Mathematics, Hindu College.
