College attacked after student’s death

Hyderabad, October 17: Alleging that the college management is responsible for the death of an Intermediate student, students staged a dharna in front of Vikas Junior College at BN Reddy Nagar and damaged its furniture on Friday.

College authorities informed the parents of Intermediate student S Manoj Kumar, 15, at about 3 am that he fell ill and was admitted to Yashoda Hospital, Malakpet. Manoj’s father, Chandrasekhar, is a truck driver and the family lives at Devarakonda.

Chandrasekhar along with his wife Chandrakala reached Yashoda Hospital at 6 am but by that time Manoj died and the body had already been shifted to Osmania General Hospital.

Manoj’s parents, shocked by the development, asked the college staff how could they shift the body to mortuary without informing them. Meanwhile, student unions came to know about the incident. Alleging that the college administration was responsible for Manoj’s death, union activists, along with the family members of Manoj and Vikas College students staged a protest on the college premises.

Some activists damaged the furniture at the college office and police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the mob.

The college staff told the police that at about 1 am, Manoj had been shifted to Nitya Hospital in BN Reddy Nagar after his roommate noticed him vomiting in the bed.

“After examining Manoj, the medical staff at Nitya Hospital advised the college staff to shift the boy to a better hospital. Manoj was then shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Malakpet where he was declared brought dead,” Vanasthalipuram inspector Madhu Mohan said.

The college staff then took the body to OGH mortuary and informed the police. “According to students, Manoj had been sick since last five days. However, only after the postmortem the cause of death will be known,” the inspector said.
