Ludhiana, July 18: An employee of a private firm was shot dead by two unidentified robbers in the busy Ghumar Mandi area in broad daylight on Friday. The deceased was identified as Rajesh Kumar (22), a resident of Pratap Nagar near Sangeet Cinema.
The assailants allegedly first tried to snatch Rajesh’s bag containing Rs 3 lakh but when they did not succeed, they shot him and fled the spot leaving behind the money.
The sources in the police said that Rajesh was working with CMS Associates in Model Town as a collection agent and was on his way to deposit Rs 3 lakh in a bank in Feroze Gandhi market on a motorcycle, after collecting it from the Reliance Communications centre in Model Town at the time of the incident.
As soon as Rajesh reached near Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of
Vocational Studies (GGNIVS) around 2.30 pm, two youths, who were probably following Rajesh on a motorcycle intercepted him and tried to snatch away the bag.
Rajesh however did not let go of it, sources added.
Hearing the screams, some students of the institute and nearby residents rushed to the spot.
Sensing trouble, the robbers shot at the victim and fled the spot.
Eyewitnesses reportedly could not see the weapon but noted down the registration number of the assailants’ motorcycle but one digit was missing.
Students of GGINVS and passersby rushed Rajesh to Iqbal Nursing Home near Guru Nanak Stadium but owing to his critical condition, doctors referred him to DMCH, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Senior police officers including SP City I Harsh Bansal and Sarabha Nagar DSP Bhupinder Singh among others reached the spot to probe the matter.
