Cold wave sweeps across north India

New Delhi, December 21: Srinagar recorded its lowest temperature of the season with famous Dal Lake witnessing a thin layer of ice on its surface today as a cold wave sweeping across several parts of northern region continued unabated.

The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir experienced the coldest night this winter recording minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, which was four notches below normal, a Met official said.

Due to dip in temperature in the Valley, a thin layer of ice was formed on the water bodies including the Dal Lake.

Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, registered a minimum temperature of minus 7.0 degrees Celsius, while famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded minus 7.5 degrees.

Leh district in frontier region of Ladakh was the coldest place in the state with a low of minus 17.0 degrees Celsius.
