CNG bus in flames

New Delhi, Dec 01: Third fire incident in 4 days a low-floor DTC bus caught fire near RML Hospital at 11.20 am on Monday. No one was injured, the police said.

This is the third incident of a CNG-run DTC bus catching fire in Delhi in the last four days. The bus on route number RL-77 was among the 150 low-floor buses recently inducted into the fleet, a DTC official said.

While DTC has initiated an inquiry, officials said the fire was caused by leakage of oil on the engine. On November 26, a DTC bus carrying around 40 schoolchildren caught fire in Mayur Vihar, followed by a similar incident at Mehrauli a day later.

‘Check all DTC buses at depot’
Four days after a DTC bus carrying schoolchildren caught fire, Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Monday directed managers of bus depots to check all DTC buses for leakage.

Post-inspection, a special CNG leakage-proof sticker will be pasted on the bus, it was decided. The decision was taken following a meeting with the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Protection and Control Authority, led by former bureaucrat Bhure Lal.

The meeting was attended by CNG kit manufacturers, DTC officials, and bus manufacturers. Lovely said the Transport department will carry out a special enforcement drive against all commercial vehicles for checking CNG and pollution-related documents.
