CM seeks report on botched eye surgeries

Hyderabad, October 11 : Fourtee n labourers of Gogulapadu village of Gurajala mandal, who underwent eye operations at an eye camp in Hyderabad, have developed infection and five of them face the risk of losing sight. The surgeries were performed at the Rangareddy Lions Eye Hospital near Gandhi hospital in July.

Following a complaint by Gurajala MLA Y Srinivasa Rao, chief minister K Rosaiah sought a report on the matter from the district administration besides ordering that necessary treatment should be provided to the victims either at Guntur or Hyderabad.

Upon directions of collector Ramanjaneyulu, Guntur Medical College assistant professor of ophthalmology V Srinivasa Rao visited the village this morning and examined eleven patients. He recommended reoperation for four persons who developed serious infection and hospitalisation for others.

According to villagers, Yellamanda, an RMP from Damacharla village in Nalgonda district, came to Gogulapadu on July 20 and organised an eye camp in the village. He examined many villagers and identified 18 for cataract operation.

The next day, he took 14 persons to Hyderabad and surgeries were performed at the Rangareddy Lions Eye Hospital.

The patients were discharged the next day and asked to visit the hospital for a check-up after six weeks.

But they developed infection immediately after returning to the village. The condition of Prasadam Brahmaniah (64), Pagilla Badramma, Gopigopu Venkaiah, Vinukonda Guravamma and S Annapurnamma is said to be serious.

When contacted, Yellamanda told Express over the phone that he was preparing to take the villagers for a re-examination and was, in fact, waiting in the Nadikudi railway station for them.

Former MLA of Gurajala Janga Krishna Murthy demanded action against the guilty.
