The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Friday informed that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has sanctioned Rs 125 crore for the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-11) scheduled to be held at HICC from
October 1 to 19.
Addressing a press conference at the GHMC Headquarters, GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain and Commissioner M T Krishna Babu said that the amount would be utilised for upgradation of 125 km road corridor from airport to star hotels, railway station to convention centre, sanitation, remodeling of junctions, renovation of 35 fountains and beautification of city. He said that 35 new fountains would also be constructed as part of city’s beautification.
Krishna Babu said that nearly 10,000 to 12,000 delegates and 210 ministers from from 190 countries and heads of seven to eight nations are expected to participate in the event. He said that a special vigilance team has been formed to monitor sanitation,debris dumping on roads and to check illegal hoardings. He said that 23 commercial
organisations including SBH, GMR and Mantri came forward to maintain 35 fountains costing Rs 25 to 40 lakhs per fountain.
He said that the State Bank of Hyderabad has agreed to sponsor a camp in the month of August to promote Indian culture at a cost of nearly Rs 75 lakhs. He informed that the Central government has so far did not release a single paisa for the event. He said that the GHMC has requested the State Government to relea se Rs 400 crores for the event. However, the government has released Rs 125 crore, so far.
Krishna Babu said that the GHMC has asked the cable operators to remove cables hanging in Road Number 1, 2, 3 in Banjara Hills immediately. He also asked the Hyderabad Metro Rail to stop all road testing works and debris material from the roads by the end of August to facilitate recarpeting of roads.
