CM orders immediate repairs to roads in state

Hyderabad, September 21: People of the state can expect some relief from the back-breaking rides on the pot-holed roads soon as the government has decided to repair and reconstruct them. Roads to an extent of 8,705 km will be reconditioned.

Chief minister K Rosaiah today asked the R&B department to immediately take up reconstruction and repair of all damaged roads throughout the State. He directed the finance department to release funds for the works under various heads and as per the requirement. He wanted additional funds to be released wherever necessary. Rosaiah today held a review meeting on the damage to the road networks due to floods with the R&B, GHMC and finance department officials at his camp office.

He was explained that in all 8,705 km of road surface was damaged with some stretches experiencing extensive damage. There were also 90 breaches and so far 78 of them were restored.

There were 461 traffic interruptions and 444 of them were restored. While 1,128 mandals have been affected by the heavy rain, an average rainfall of 80 days was reported during the period from June 6 to September 18, he was told. Roads to an extent of 954 km were damaged in Kurnool district and 425 km in Nalgonda district.

The engineering officials were instructed to take up restoration works on a war-footing to restore traffic. The engineers-in-chief and chief engineers have been deputed to districts to monitor restoration works.

Rosaiah directed the GHMC commissioner to immediately take up reconstruction, repair and resurfacing of roads in Hyderabad. The commissioner explained that contracts for repair works had already been awarded and once the rain stopped works would begin on a war-footing and completed in 10 days time. R&B minister G Aruna Kumari, principal secretary Lakshmi Parthasarathi, GHMC commissioner Sameer Sharma, disaster management commissioner T Radha and other officials participated in the meeting.
