CM asks ministers to restore peace

Hyderabad, December 16: Even as protests against the Centre’s decision to set in motion the process for forming separate Telangana state continued for the fifth day in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah tonight exhorted his cabinet colleagues to unitedly work for restoration of peace and tranquility in the state.

He appealed to them to leave the vexed issue to the Centre for adjudication, information minister J Geeta Reddy told reporters after the cabinet meeting.

After the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister impressed upon his cabinet colleagues that the Congress High Command was working out an amicable solution to the issue. “We should collectively work for restoration of peace in the state, which is imperative for implementation of welfare schemes and developmental programmes”, he said.

All the ministers attended the meeting and assured to work unitedly strengthen the hands of the Chief Minister, she said.

In Anantapur, police resorted to lathicharge on students of the Sri Krishnadevaraya University following their stir by bringing into the campus the body of a painter who had died a natural death to create unrest, even as agitators cutting across partylines organised road blockade agitation in over 100 places in support of united Andhra Pradesh.

The students called for a bandh in Anantapur district in protest against police lathicharge. The situation continued to be tense in Anantapur but under control, she said, adding some miscreants had brought the body of the painter.
