Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Saturday approved the Hyderabad Metrpolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s proposal for a HUDCO loan of Rs 1,670 crore for taking up the Krishna Phase III Project to meet the water needs of the GHMC area.
The Chief Minister took the decision at a review meeting held at the Secretariat with Labour Minister D Nagender, Municipal Administration and Urban Development department’s Principal Secretary Sam Bob and other senior officials. He asked the Board to complete the Krishna Phase-III Project at any cost and by December 2013 the water should reach the city.
The officials told the Chief Minister that reliability of existing sources is diminishing year by year. The Osmansagar and Himayatsagar sources are drying up regularly and dwindling inflows to Singur and Manjira sources thus creating problems on its dependability. The total installed capacity of existing sources is about 340 mgd. Based on the source dependability analysis, the available net quantity of water would be in the order of 271.50 mgd.
The officials told that the Chief Minister that there was an immediate need to augment water supply from Krishna Phase-III to meet the immediate deficit. Responding to the proposal, Kiran Kumar Reddy immediately approved the proposal of HUDCO loan of Rs 1,670 crore towards the project.
Due to rapid urbanisation in Hyderabad city and merger of surrounding municipalities into Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), IT Sectors, ORR Growth corridors, industrial clusters etc. have created huge water supply demand in addition to the normal domestic demand.
The main components of the project are construction of Water Treatment Plant (WTP) of 90 mgd capacity, Construction of clear water reservoirs, Balancing Reservoirs of 117 ML capacity to facilitate intermediate pumping, construction of pump houses and erection of pumping equipment, laying of clear water transmission mains of 113.5 km length, laying of distribution trunk mains of 62 km length to connect to service reservoirs.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister directed the Board to plug all leakages in the supply and distribution of water. (INN)
