Clash in north-east Delhi locality over kite flying

New Delhi: Members of two communities clashed over kite flying in Gokulpuri area of north-east Delhi leaving several persons injured on Independence Day evening.

“We have arrested one person for pelting stones and resorting to violence in connection with the clash that occurred around 3 PM yesterday. Three more persons have been detained,” said AK Singla, DCP(north east).

The SHO of Gokulpuri, who allegedly did not respond promptly to the incident, has been “suspended”, he said.

The trouble started when two motorcyclists objected to some persons flying kite on the road and asked them to give way at Shiv Vihar in Gokulpuri area, police said.

Those who were flying kite allegedly manhandled the duo who went away but later returned with more men and clashed with the locals. The two groups pelted stones and hurled bottles at each other.

Police tried to bring the situation under control but they were also targeted by the trouble-makers and one head constable sustained head injury, said the DCP.

More police force was rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control. “The situation in the area has normalised now and police personnel have been deployed to prevent further disturbance,” he said.

Senior police officers met the locals from both the communities as a confidence building step and sought their cooperation in maintaining peace in the area.
