Lucknow: In UP civic election, nearly half of the BJP candidates lost their deposits which is quite opposite the common conception that the party got a grand victory.
According to the news published in TOI, the number of seats on which BJP lost deposits are 3,656 which is higher than the number of seats it won which is 2,366.
It is also reported that 45% of the party candidates lost this deposits.
Analysis also shows that the vote share of the party in the contests for Nagar Panchayat members is only 11.1% which is the least of all the three tiers. This low share of BJP would worry the party.
It may be mentioned that BJP had fielded more candidates than any other political party in this civic polls. Out of 12, 644 seats, it contested against 8,038.
At Nagar Panchayat level, 664 of party candidates won whereas 1,462 lost their deposits.
On the other hand, 54%, 66%, and 75% of SP, BSP and Congress candidates lost their deposits respectively.
Comparing the result of these civic polls with 2012 elections has no meaning since, at that time, SP and BSP did not participate. However, in 2006 polls, SP had contested on less than 40% of seats of Nagar Panchayats and gained 13% vote share.
BJP got 41% of votes in the mayoral contests in 16 cities which is far less than 48.5% recorded in 2014 Lok Sabha election, TOI reported.
