Hyderabad, November 06: Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Danam Nagender today resigned as Greater Hyderabad Congress President, following dissatisfaction within the ruling Congress over selection of candidates for the November 23 Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Elections.
Mr Nagender submitted his resignation letter to Pradesh Congress Chief D Srinivas after supporters of unsuccessful aspirants for the party tickets, staged a dharna in front of his residence, party sources said.
Upset at not getting the party ticket, the aspirants, along with their supporters, raised slogans against Mr Nagender.
A high drama was witnessed in front of the residence of the state Congress unit President, with some of the dejected aspirants threatening to immolate themselves. After several rounds of discussions between Mr Srinivas and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah with All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader in-charge of Congress party affairs in Andhra Pradesh M Veerappa Moily, the list was finalised on the penultimate day for filing of nominations late last night.
Reacting to the protests, Mr Rosaiah told mediapersons here that the list was finalised as per the formula decided by the Congress High Command. It would be proper for any of the aggrieved persons to take it up with the PCC chief in the appropriate fora.
As per AICC guidelines, the party had finalised the list after reviews in the presence of Mr Moily and Mr Rosaiah. After several rounds of consultations with among others MPs, MLAs and party functionaries concerned, party sources said.
