City peaceful on Mecca Masjid blast anniversary

Hyderabad, May 19: Amid tight security, the fourth anniversary of the Mecca Masjid blast passed off peacefully across the twin cities on Wednesday.

In the Old City too, life went on just as any other normal day with all the shops doing business as usual.

In every street, armed policemen, including CRPF and other central forces were seen, keeping strict vigil on all those passing by.

Tourists made a beeline to the Charminar, perhaps unaware of the fact that it was on this day in 2007 that bomb blasts rocked the historic Mecca masjid.

Police heaved a sigh of relief after the mid day prayers in Mecca masjid and its surrounding mosques passed off without any disturbance. The faithful were sent inside only after thorough frisking.

Meanwhile, members of various Muslim organisations gave a representation with a set of demands to governor ESL Narasimhan.

Though the Governor was not in Raj Bhavan when the members went there, they gave the representation to his secretary.

The members demanded that the ongoing probe in the Lumbini and Gokul Chat serial blasts should also be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the lines of the Mecca Masjid blast case.

They also demanded that the NIA probe the role of a conspiracy angle both prior and post the bomb blast at these three places.

“The role of some senior police officers who, without any investigation or evidence, named Muslim organizations and Muslim youth as involved in the blasts should be probed. More than 100 Muslim youth were arrested, kept in illegal confinement and subjected to torture,” Majlis-Bachao- Tehreek (MBT) corporator Amjeed Ullah Khan said.

He also demanded that the role of RSS members should be probed by the NIA. The members reminded that the state government had not kept its promise, made in the floor of house, that compensation in the form of money, government jobs or houses would be provided to the youth who were arrested illegally in connection with the bomb blasts.

“But not a single affected youth has been compensated so far,” Khan added.
