City College being converted into a film shooting centre?

The objective behind establishing educational institutions is to impart education to younger generation. But with the changing times objectives of establishing educational institutions has also changed. Today education is commercialized. One such example is one of the oldest educational institutions of Hyderabad; the City College. This historical college is gradually being transformed into a film shooting centre or temporary studio. The education department is totally responsible for this. Recently this college has been converted as a rehabilitation centre for vagabond children.

It must be noted that the 6th Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan founded the first city school in the early 1865s as Madrasa Darul Uloom. In 1921 city high school was shifted to the present City College building. The medium was Urdu. Rs. 8 lakh were spent on building construction. In 1925 the school was developed into a college and it became famous as City College.

The shooting of Salman Khan’s film ‘Tere Naam’ was done in this college and at that time only the heritage structure was painted red and it remained the same till date. Today the building is in very dilapidated condition. The college has been conferred with autonomy by the University Grants Commission from 2004. The college has been accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC. Despite this due to the negligence of higher officials this building is in dilapidated state. If the education department gives the historical building of City College for shooting purposes then a day will come when the City College located at the bank of Moosi River, adjacent to Andhra Pradesh High Court will be converted into a shooting studio. According to senior citizens the historical City College needs renovation and using an educational institution, especially one that is housed in a heritage building, for the purpose of commercial activities needs to be stopped.
