Citizens urged to protect monuments for posterity

Hyderabad, December 29: The Senate member of Osmania University and secretary, Architecture Heritage Foundation, Mr Sajjad Shahid, has appealed to the citizens to protect and conserve the historical monuments to be handed over to the future generations.

Inaugurating “Our Architectural Heritage” — exhibition of sketches by Prof Nawab Mir Azmath Ali Khan, grandson of Nawab Sikandar Jah Bahadur, on Tuesday organized by Indo-British Academy here, Mr Khan demanded that the Centre take over the monuments which were built after 1910 under the protection of Archeology Survey of India. He lamented that the Nizam’s monuments were being destroyed due to lack of protection from the State government. He also said that most of the historic buildings were built after 1910.

Prof. Nawab Mir Azmath Ali Khan said that the architecture not only provides shelter, but also gives peace and prosperity. He opined that the “Ramasethu” was built between India and Sri Lanka to invade Sri Lanka to rescue Sri Sita from the clutches of dreaded demon king Ravana. He urged the students to learn architecture patiently.

The Indo-British Academy Director, Mr N. A. Mateen, said that a three-day exhibition of sketches on Chalukyan, Kakatiya, Qutub Shahi and Asaf Jahi architecture would be opened in the city. He said that a slide show will be held on December 29 on “Qutubshahi Architecture” by Deputy Director, State Department of Archaeology, Mr M.A. Qayyum.
