Christchurch attack impact: Security measures beefed up at Makkah Masjid Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Hyderabad police has further beefed up security in and around the historic Macca Masjid, in the wake of the mass shooting at two mosques at Christchurch in New Zealand in which 50 persons were killed. As reported by Deccan Chronicle, though there is no specific input to suggest a terror threat, the Hyderabad police do not want to leave anything to chance.

A meeting of senior police officials was held soon after the New Zealand attack, during which it was decided to take up precautionary measures in and around the premises, especially on Fridays. It must be noted that on Fridays the mosque witnesses a huge gathering and thousands of people gather to offer ‘Namaz-e-Jumma’.

Allaying apprehensions a senior police official said, “It is a precautionary measure. It is always better to be prepared.” Since the blast took place in Makkah Masjid on May 18, 2007, a large number of policemen are deployed every Friday. However, further enhancing security, special branch personnel, another wing of the Hyderabad police, have also been asked to step up vigil in the vicinity of the mosque. Patrolling has also been intensified further during the time prayers are held at the place of worship.
